Arts World Financial Center Celebrates Earth Day With Indoor Oasis Of Art, April 15-May 12
"Forest" and "Koi Pond" part of NY’s Greenest, Battery Park City’s Earth Day celebration designed to inspire environmental awareness, education, and appreciation
New York, NY (April 9, 2010) – A unique pair of art installations will turn the World Financial Center Winter Garden into an indoor oasis just in time for Earth Day this month.
As part of “NY’s Greenest,” Battery Park City’s Earth Day celebration, Arts World Financial Center will host
Forest, a miniature forest made of used clothing, and
Koi Pond, a life-like floor painting, in its spectacular glass-vaulted Winter Garden.
From April 15–May 12, the Winter Garden will be home to
Forest, a sculptural installation that transforms used clothing into a natural landscape in miniature, with cloth branches decked in foliage made of textured fabric. Created by artists Suzanne and Mathilde Husky,
Forest explores issues of natural resource exploitation and is part of a benefit exhibition entitled “What Matters Most?” at NYC’s Exit Art organized by ecoartspace, a bicoastal non-profit platform for artists addressing environmental issues since 1999.
The indoor oasis will expand the following week with
Koi Pond, a chalk pastel painting by artists Rod Tryon and Anthony Cappetto of Art for After Hours. From April 20–23, visitors can watch the piece come to life as the pair work in a traditional “street painting” technique to create a life-like image of a koi pond on the Winter Garden floor. The piece will remain on display for two days after its completion.
“As New York City’s greenest community, there’s no better place to celebrate Earth Day’s 40th Anniversary than in Battery Park City,” said Debra Simon, Executive and Artistic Director of Arts World Financial Center. “Our two spectacular art exhibitions achieve a perfect balance between fun and enlightenment.”
