New York, NY – May 14, 2010– Lower Manhattan’s spectacular waterfront will provide the backdrop for a wildly fun mix of family-friendly, free events during this summer’s River To River Festival®, including a 4th of July Concert at Battery Park with headliner Dan Zanes and Children’s Day at The Seaport with The Apples in Stereo.

Presented by American Express, the 2010 River To River Festival’s family-friendly highlights include:

• River To River Festival’s annual 4th of July Concert at Battery Park expands this year with music for all ages including Dan Zanes performing his own brand of Broadway classics. The day will be capped with a participatory parade of musicians and kids from throughout the tri-state area performing 76 Trombones. Acclaimed Columbian band La Cumbiamba eNeYé! kicks off the day with a concert at 1pm. Bring your blanket and enjoy a day of jugglers, stilt walkers, and a walk around cast of larger than life characters. (July 4)

Children’s Day at the Seaport returns, culminating in the spectacular Target Fireworks accompanied by performances by The Apples in Stereo and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. During the day, families can enjoy performances by Gordon from Sesame Street, Angelina Ballerina and more, while meeting their favorite storybook characters like Clifford the Big Red Dog, Curious George and Madeline. (June 26)

• On June 23rd at the World Financial Center Winter Garden, American Ballroom Theater Competition will showcase talented dancers from New York City public schools competing for the grand prize. Under the direction of ballroom legend Pierre Dulaine (portrayed by Antonio Banderas in the film “Take the Lead”), the dancers will Fox Trot, Merengue, Rumba, Swing and Tango their way to the gold. (June 23)

• One of the city’s most spectacular outdoor screening series returns with Movie Nights On The Elevated Acre, featuring classic films screened on a stunning open-air rooftop plaza overlooking the East River. This year’s lineup includes two family-friendly classics: Auntie Mame (August 5) and The Muppets Take Manhattan. (August 19)

“The 2010 River To River Festival offers families an exciting array of cultural experiences, all in the shadow of landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge,” says Robin Schatell, Executive Director of The River To River Festival. “And best of all, it’s all completely free.”

Named “one of the city’s most compelling summer series” by The New York Times, the River To River Festival is New York’s largest free summer arts festival. Founded in 2002 to help revitalize Lower Manhattan after September 11th, the festival draws hundreds of thousands of people each year to Downtown’s spectacular waterfront. The events span venues from the World Financial Center and Rockefeller Park on the Hudson River to Castle Clinton National Monument, Wagner Park, and Battery Park at Manhattan’s tip to The Elevated Acre and The Seaport on the East River.

Tuesday, June 22

National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Teen Exhibition
Presented by Arts World Financial Center

This exhibition showcases video, animation, writing, photography, painting, sculpture, fashion and graphic design by teenage artists who have earned national recognition through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. These talented teenagers follow in the footsteps of Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Philip Pearlstein, Mel Bochner, Sylvia Plath, Tom Otterness and Zac Posen, who all won Awards in their youth. Through June 25, Noon–4pm, World Financial Center Courtyard Gallery, 220 Vesey Street. Free.

American Ballroom Theater Dancing Classrooms Colors of the Rainbow Team Match
Presented by Arts World Financial Center

Fresh from this year’s Dancing Classrooms program, talented 5th and 8th grade dancers from New York City public schools compete in this city-wide competition for the grand prize as they Fox Trot, Merengue, Rumba, Swing and Tango their way to the gold. 5th graders, 3–4:30pm; 8th graders, 6–7:30pm. World Financial Center Winter Garden, 220 Vesey Street. Free.

Children's Day & Fireworks with The Apples in stereo
Presented by The Seaport

This beloved event returns for its 18th year with performances by Gordon from Sesame Street, Angelina Ballerina and more. Kids can meet their favorite storybook characters like Clifford the Big Red Dog, Curious George and Madeline. In the evening don't miss The Apples in Stereo, with special guests - the Brooklyn Youth Chorus - part of our Summer Stars series, plus the spectacular Target Fireworks. Noon, South Street Seaport, Pier 17. Free.

Dan Zanes Jam & Jubilee Broadway2Battery The Battery 4th of July Concert and Family Festival
Presented by Alliance for Downtown New York

Celebrate the Fourth of July family style with Grammy®-Award-winning artist Dan Zanes and his incredible array of musical friends. Spend the day dancing to the infectious rhythms of La Cumbiamba eNeYé!, singing along to Dan’s own special brand of Broadway classics, and marching in a participatory parade of musicians and kids from throughout the tri-state areas performing 76 Trombones! Bring a blanket and enjoy the lawn along with jugglers, stilt walkers, a cast of larger than life characters. 1pm doors, 2pm La Cumbiamba eNeYé!, 3pm Dan Zanes and Friends / 76 Trombones, Battery Park, State Street and Battery Place. Classic New York Features Paired with Independent Shorts
Presented by Alliance for Downtown New York

Based on the Broadway production and nominated for six Academy Awards, this beloved 1958 classic stars Rosalind Russell as Mame, an exuberant and unconventional socialite in the roaring 20’s. Featuring a short film screening by filmmaker Cheryl Dunn. TICKETS ARE REQUIRED and will be available, two per person, at the street-level Water Street entrance to the Elevated Acre on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 6:00 pm on the day of the screening. 8pm, The Elevated Acre at 55 Water Street, between Broad and William Streets. Free.

The Muppets Take Manhattan: Broadway2Battery
Movie Nights on The Elevated Acre:
Classic New York Features Paired with Independent Shorts
Presented by Alliance for Downtown New York

Frank Oz directs this classic ode to Broadway in which the Muppets travel to New York intent on finding a producer for their1984 musical, Manhattan Melodies. Featuring a short film by Jay Hufford. TICKETS ARE REQUIRED and will be available, two per person, at the street-level Water Street entrance to the Elevated Acre on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 6:00 pm on the day of the screening. 8pm, The Elevated Acre at 55 Water Street, between Broad and William Streets.
